World Suicide Prevention Day (10th Sep)

4:33 am

Hey guys, today is world suicide prevention day. I know not many people know that there is actually such as day and I myself only found out about it few weeks back.

So i'm actually trying to play a part in raising awareness about suicide prevention and tell you how you can help someone you know who might be suicidal because...I lost a good friend to suicide.

I figured today would be apt to talk about it...

We met in JC and was quite close back then as we could clique very well. Some peers even thought we were gna get together haha, but no we didnt. We were more like siblings and he would call me 'sis'. Everyone knew him as the guy who's always laughing and cheerful because he literally laughs at the smallest things that may not even be that funny.

Together with other classmates, we would mug after school and sometimes stay for night study, play basketball, kart rider rush, get caught for attire problem too hahaha. He was one of my closest male friend back then.

After graduating we still kept in contact, went out 1 on 1, one or two times, but after I got busy with studies we drifted apart, only occasionally talking on whatsapp.

Then one fateful night, one of my jc mates broke the news in our group chat. I thought it was a joke but I knew no one would kid about such stuff. I couldn't believe it as it was just too sudden. He was only 22.

The next day I went to attend his funeral and found out it was suicide. I couldn't understand why he would do such a thing but he must had his reasons. If only somehow, someone, somewhere could have intervened, then maybe things would have been different.

I feel that suicide should not be the solution to any problems. It is an easy way to escape reality but what we need to do is to learn to face it. After what I experience at the cremation, the pain I saw everyone, especially his parents felt, I told myself that I never ever want to put my loved ones through it. Any problem, great or small, can & will be solved eventually. As long as you're alive, nothing is impossible even when it seems so. You just need to have a little faith.

Dear all, if you know of someone who might need a listening ear or professional help, please call 1800-221-4444 (24-hour) or email pat@sos.org.sg

They are the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS), the only suicide prevention centre in Singapore. They are a secular non-profit organisation which provides 24-hour confidential emotional support to people who have difficulty coping during a crisis, who are thinking of suicide or affected by suicide.

On a side note, I like how when you google "I want to kill myself", the SOS hotline appears.

& Before I end, #howru?

p.s dear bro, I still miss you. I hope you're happy wherever you are now :')
